Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (smooth ER) is similar to the Rough endoplasmic reticulum in appearance, but without the attached ribosomes.

The smooth ER helps build a variety of lipid (fat) molecules. It also helps detoxify drugs and poisons through chemical modification of these compounds.
